Buildup -- Step 6: The brake

I went over to the Tips & Tricks page and found the recommendation about using an HPI fiber disc rotor in place of the metal ones that come with the kit. Fig. 31 shows what it looks like, and why it's so superior. The stock setup gives you metal-on-metal contact between calipers & rotors to try to stop your truck. Not only is that a poor choice of friction materials to begin with, but if a little bit of dust or grease gets in there, your braking power can be decimated.

Follow steps 1 through 5 on page 14 of your manual. Step 6 has to be done a tad differently. The HPI disc is very thick and you only need to use one (instead of the two thin stock metal discs), with one caliper plate on each side. Take care to tighten down the screws evenly, until there's just a little bit of pressure on the disc. Then back out both screws 1/4 turn in alternating succession until the spool can spin freely, with no "drag brake."
